At least 13 people perish and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
