Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
