Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture at Spectators
The NFL has imposed a hefty $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal directed at fans during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. It was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was completely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the wrong finger,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Recent cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.
