Minister Says MoD Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Staff Advised to Refrain from Secret Talk in Cars.

An defence official has revealed that the MoD is currently looking into the potential security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, while staff have been advised to refrain from discussing classified information in any cars.

Safety Guidance for Defence Personnel

In a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD staff have been told not to discuss classified material while riding in Chinese cars.

He stated that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that safety is a concern in all modern cars.

We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret classification in any kind of car, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in all automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about safety.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Defence Context

The announcement follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring disruption to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.

The broader security environment highlights the importance of strong protocols and caution in every aspects of official operations, from vehicle usage to discussions habits.
